The day is intended to help and give confidence to teachers who wish to embark on the challenging, rewarding work of teaching yoga to people with cancer, using simple movement, breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques, and to explore the ways in which these can promote healing. Whether or not we intend to work specifically with people who have cancer, at some point in our teaching lives, we will have students with cancer in our classes.

By the end of the day we will have arrived at a deeper understanding of the profound effects and changes a serious illness can have, and perhaps feel better equipped to help others - friends and family as well as students - who are going through such an experience.

tutor photo Julie Friedeberger has practised yoga since 1970. She began teaching in 1987, and trained teachers between 1990 and 2000. Her experience of breast cancer in 1993 left her with a deeper trust in the power of yoga to help us to face our challenges and to heal ourselves. Since then, her key focus has been on yoga as a healing therapy, and on the effectiveness and power of the simplest of Yogic practices to help the healing process.

The approach she has been developing has grown out of her own encounter with life-changing illness, and the integration of its fruits into her life and teaching. She has offered classes for people with cancer at the Yoga Therapy Centre, London, since 1999, and has given many workshops and training days for the BWY and the Yoga Biomedical Trust. She now delivers the Teacher Training Module on yoga for people living with cancer.

Yoga has a long and rich history in the field of mind and body health. To anyone who practises seriously the benefits are undeniable. Many of the benefits of yoga have traditionally been explained through the cultural understandings of their time. These days, it is possible to add a great deal to that old wisdom with the insights of recent understandings in physiology and neuroscience.
This day will explore these modern perspectives to see what they can add to the long history of Yoga.

tutor photo Peter Blackaby has been teaching yoga for over 20 years. He originally trained as an Iyengar teacher, but his subsequent studies in osteopathy and meetings with other yoga teachers led him to change his direction, pursuing a more bio-mechanically friendly approach to asana work. Recently this has developed into a broader ‘humanistic’ perspective, with the intention of making yoga more accessible to the western mind by grounding the physical, physiological and psychological effects of yoga practice in a rational context.

More students are attending yoga classes seeking to deal with mental heath issues such as anxiety and/or depression. The day will look at yoga practices which are beneficial and those which may be contra indicated in both of these conditions. It will enable teachers to feel more confident in their teaching of these students. We shall also explore ways of teaching which can help bring students towards a state of balance.

The day will cover:
• how to recognize students with anxiety or depression
• the yogic view of these conditions
• appropriate asana practices and pranayama
• introduction to appropriate bandhas
• yoga nidra, relaxation and meditation
There will be time for practical group work and discussion.

tutor photo Sannyasi Amarajyoti has been teaching yoga for over 20 years. She is trained in the Satyananda/Bihar System of Yoga, which is a systematic approach, working with body, breath and mind. She spent 6 months in Mandala Yoga Ashram in 1994 and six months in the Ashram in Munger in India 1994-1995 with her Guru Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati. While living and training in the West of Ireland, she researched yoga practices for the management of mental health difficulties. She has a personal interest in working in this area and trains teachers to work with Yoga and Mental Health. She currently runs classes for the less mobile, teaches in prisons, and teaches regular Chakra and Meditation courses. She is an assessor and trainer of teachers in the Satyananda tradition.

A part of Tantra, Nada Yoga employs a series of techniques leading to an increasingly refined tuning of our perception, energised body and mind and a heightened awareness of our chakras. Exploring levels of sound from gross to subtle gradually draws us closer to our highest potential.

The day will cover
• An introduction to Indian classical music, incorporating ragas and tatas [rhythm patterns].
• Practices to locate and sensitise chakras, including asanas, pranayama, yoga nidra, meditation, voice work, mantra and kirtan.

By the end of the day participants will be able to
• Be aware of major resonating areas within the body
• Recognise at least one Indian music scale and rhythm pattern
• Sensitise chakras through musical notes and bija mantras
• Develop a practice of meditation through sound.

Rajesh David received his yoga teaching diploma from The Yoga Institute, Mumbai, India, in 1980. A composer and singer trained in Indian classical music, he is inspired by the mystic saint-poets of India. Upasana is a serious practitioner of Authentic Movement and is also a fully-trained Yoga teacher in the Satyananda tradition. Rajesh and Upasana are closely associated with the Mandala Yoga Ashram in Wales, where they lived for four years and where they continue to teach. Together, they have led many courses and workshops throughout the UK.

We live in a society that prizes action, activity and expression. From our earliest schooldays, we learnt the importance of working hard and achieving good results. But many of us are less familiar with - and consequently less comfortable with - our inner world. The ability to be still, to connect with that quiet still centre within, may sometimes elude us. We may still find it difficult to strike a balance between the outer life and the inner.

During this day, we will explore the relationship between movement and stillness, using both the yoga practices that you are familiar with - asana, pranayama and yoga nidra - and also taking the time to learn some more meditative techniques and seeing how these may be applied in our daily life. The program will be suitable for all practitioners of yoga who wish to explore this dimension.

Swami Satyaprakash has been practising yoga for 40 years and teaching for 30 years, in the tradition of Satyananda Yoga. She is an established teacher trainer and has directed the Satyananda Yoga Centre in Birmingham since 1986. She re-visits regularly the parent ashram in India, the Bihar School of Yoga.

Satyananda Yoga is an integral form of classical yoga that includes the practice of cleansings, asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha, Yoga Nidra and a wide range of meditative practices.
